As part of its support of financial literacy and a local elementary school, First Reliance Bank in Florence, S.C., sponsors a Paws for Reading program to help children improve their reading skills. The three-year-old program uses a certified therapy dog to serve as nonjudgmental "reading partners" for children challenged with lessons in reading aloud. The reading dog, Muffin, is owned by First Reliance loan officer Tamra Broach.
Delmae Elementary School officials report dramatic improvements in the reading skills of students involved with the innovative reading program.
